Summary:
The staff prepares for Valentine's Day. Romano brings his dog into the OR for surgery. The rivalry between Chen and Malucci hurts a patient. Abby treats a former patient of Carter's and learns that not every story in the ER has a happy ending. Luka must tell two children that both of their parents are dead. David Greene and Isabelle Corday meet and hit it off. Lucy seeks advice from Carter while treating a young law student who may have schizophrenia, but he keeps brushing her off. When he finally gets around to checking on Lucy, he finds her lying on the floor, stabbed in the chest, just after being stabbed himself.

Summary:
Weaver discovers Carter and Lucy. As police begin to arrive, a harried Benton, the only surgical resident on duty, treats both. Greene and Corday are paged to return to the hospital. Carter almost loses his kidney, but because of Anspaugh's quick thinking, Benton is able to save it; Carter's prognosis is good. By contrast, Lucy's heart stops and her chest is cracked open; the team stabilizes her. While waiting for emergency surgery to fix a life-threatening blood clot, however, Lucy flatlines. Romano and Corday desperately try to save her life but she dies; the staff receives the news. Paul Sobriki, the patient who stabbed Lucy and Carter, is found running naked down Michigan Avenue and is returned to the ER. His wife arrives and can't believe that her husband is capable of such a violent act. And while Benton is busy with Carter, Cleo is forced to crack open a man's chest to save his life; Benton rebukes her.
