Song Info
"As Long As You're Mine" is a musical number from the hit Broadway musical Wicked and both the music and lyrics were written by Stephen Schwartz. It was originally sung by Idina Menzel and Norbert Leo Butz, who played Elphaba and Fiyero in the original Broadway cast. The song can be found as track #15 on the original Broadway cast recording of Wicked. The duet is performed in the second act of the musical, as Elphaba and Fiyero are in the Great Gillikin Forest and alone at last. It shows them expressing their new found love for one another, while knowing that it may not last. After the song, Elphaba rushes to help her sister Nessarose (the Wicked Witch of the East), whom she believes to be in trouble. In the first verse, Elphaba sings about how her and Fiyero's relationship probably won't last. In the second verse, Fiyero sings about being brainless, a subtle reference to "Dancing Through Life" (performed in the first act), where Fiyero first arrives at Shiz University and is instantly showing himself to be shallow and brainless. This is also a reference to The Wizard of Oz, in which the Scarecrow asked the Wizard to give him brains. It acts as foreshadowing; at the end of the show it becomes obvious that Fiyero has been transformed into the Scarecrow by Elphaba, who tried to save him. The song also has some mildly suggestive themes, such as when Elphaba sings about lying beside Fiyero and waking up her body, subtle references to their sexual relationship. At the end of the song Elphaba comments, "For the first time, I feel... Wicked!" Stephen Schwartz stated after Wicked opened that this was really the only love song he wrote for the show. However, he stated, "It's a love song and it's supposed to sound sexy and passionate. But there's a darkness underneath it."
